Why Water Quality Testing Matters
Drilling a successful borehole is only half the journey. The water you extract must be safe for its intended useβwhether that's drinking, irrigation, livestock, or industrial processing. In Kenya, groundwater quality varies significantly by region. Areas like Kajiado and parts of Machakos are known for high fluoride levels, while coastal regions may have salinity issues. Testing ensures you know exactly what's in your water and what water treatment, if any, is needed.
Critical Warning: Water that looks clean can still contain harmful bacteria, high fluoride, or heavy metals. Never assume your borehole water is safe without testing.
Common Water Quality Issues in Kenyan Boreholes
Different regions of Kenya present different water quality challenges:
High Fluoride
Common in the Rift Valley and parts of Kajiado, Machakos, and Nakuru. Excessive fluoride causes dental and skeletal fluorosis. The KEBS limit is 1.5 mg/L.
High Salinity / Total Dissolved Solids (TDS)
Common in coastal areas and parts of Eastern Kenya. High TDS affects taste and can damage irrigation systems and appliances.
Iron and Manganese
Common in volcanic regions (Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado). Causes staining of laundry and fixtures, and can affect taste.
Bacterial Contamination
Can occur anywhere, especially in poorly constructed or maintained boreholes. E. coli and coliform bacteria indicate fecal contamination.
Hard Water (High Calcium and Magnesium)
Common in many areas. Causes scale buildup in pipes and appliances, reducing efficiency and lifespan.
Nitrates
Often from agricultural runoff or septic systems. High nitrates are dangerous for infants and pregnant women.
Heavy Metals
Arsenic, lead, mercury, and other heavy metals can occur naturally or from industrial pollution. They are toxic even at low levels.

Essential Water Quality Parameters to Test
Not all water tests are equal. Here are the essential parameters for Kenyan boreholes:
Bacteriological Tests
- Total Coliforms: Must be 0 per 100ml for drinking water.
- E. coli: Must be 0 per 100ml for drinking water.
- Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC): Indicator of general bacterial activity.
Physical Tests
- Turbidity: Clarity of water (should be less than 5 NTU).
- Color: Should be clear, not yellow or brown.
- Taste and Odor: Should be pleasant, not metallic or musty.
Chemical Tests
- pH: Should be between 6.5 and 8.5.
- Total Hardness: Ideal range 100-300 mg/L as CaCO3.
- Fluoride: Should be less than 1.5 mg/L.
- Iron: Should be less than 0.3 mg/L.
- Manganese: Should be less than 0.1 mg/L.
- Nitrates (as NO3): Should be less than 50 mg/L.
- Chlorides: Should be less than 250 mg/L.
- Sulfates: Should be less than 250 mg/L.
Heavy Metals
- Arsenic: Should be less than 0.01 mg/L.
- Lead: Should be less than 0.01 mg/L.
- Mercury: Should be less than 0.001 mg/L.
- Cadmium: Should be less than 0.003 mg/L.

When to Test Your Borehole Water
Regular testing ensures your water remains safe and identifies problems early:
- Initial Testing: Immediately after drilling and pump installation.
- Annually: Recommended for residential boreholes (basic potability test).
- Quarterly: Recommended for commercial, agricultural, and institutional systems.
- After Heavy Rains: Surface contamination can enter boreholes after flooding.
- If Water Quality Changes: Any change in taste, color, odor, or clarity.
- After Repairs: Following any pump or casing repairs.
